Italo Calvino was born in San Remo in 1923. After studying agricultural sciences, philosophy and literature, he worked for several years as an editor at the Italian publishing house Einaudi. He then lived as a freelance writer in Rome, Paris and Siena, where he died in 1985. His work has been translated into all world languages and has been awarded numerous literary prizes. Many of Calvino's books are popular and school reading in Italy today. The priest in Italo Calvino's fairy tale is a rascal in a robe. He has already double-crossed many a harmless wanderer with his bet on who will get angry first. Even the brothers Fiore and Giovanni are no match for him. But in the third brother, the youngest and cleverest, the priest finds his master. Pirolo devises a ruse to make the priest angry. And indeed Susanne Janssen has illustrated this fairy tale in a pictorial language that is reminiscent of the Renaissance masters and yet completely new and her own.
