The text of the fairy tale follows the early version handwritten by Wilhelm Grimm, which appeared in the complete edition of 1819. The dynamic pictorial ideas of the artist Susanne Janssen correspond to the pictorial quality of the text. She has freed herself from formal considerations for a childish target group. She has the courage to go in search of her very own, "authentic" language and shows in her pictures the inner development that the childlike Little Red Riding Hood, a girl full of expectation, painfully undergoes in her encounter with the greedy wolf who seduces and devours her. The portrayal of the figures is full of tension: oversized, seen from changing angles, sometimes distorted, but also relaxed and detached. Susanne Janssen places her figures in front of a painterly photo background, she combines oil painting with collage, captures moods through light and sombre colour tones. She has succeeded in creating a sophisticated and multi-layered picture book that goes beyond the scope of familiar fairy tale illustration through its consistent artistic design.
